Ek Prayaas is an effort to provide a platform for learning to the underprivileged children of Kolkata.
We aim to contribute towards the upliftment of their lives irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

ABOUT US

Ek Prayaas is a Non-Profit Organization registered under The West Bengal Society’s Act. It is a project, which envisions in bringing social and economic transformation by educating the less fortunate children among the various communities of Kolkata. It is an effort to support, educate and develop the lives of under privileged children presently living in the slums of Kolkata. We provide breakfast and lunch free of cost at school. The school also focuses on extra-curricular activities like sports, theatre and vocational training programs for the children. We strive to transform the lives of these children engaged in child-labour, into children who will grow to become economically independent, well-rounded and enterprising adults, and have a positive impact on the social environment around them. With this in mind, Ek Prayaas has a mission to be a role model school that extends "literacy into learning".

We introduce ourselves as a Primary School providing education to the children from economically backward families of Kolkata since the last 12 years. Currently, we have student strength of more than 200 children from classes Lower Nursery to 5 . Most of our children are first generation learners who come from surrounding slums and their parent(s) fall in the extremely low income bracket. Our motto is "EMPOWER THROUGH LEARNING

The project is intended to demonstrate true love and tenderness to the less fortunate and unprivileged children. We are hence committed to deliver services to the true and rightful beneficiaries, without any discrimination of any form and working towards considering the gender based phenomenon and working to ensure it minimizes internal and external stigmatization among the beneficiaries.

OUR MISSION

Education remains an exclusive exercise for just one reason: there is a difference in the quality of learning at schools for the privileged few and at schools for the marginalized. With this in mind Ek Prayaas hopes to be a model school that in turn spreads the learning along with literacy.

Ek Prayaas collaborates with others in this endeavor to ensure that each child housed in its school grows to be a self-confident individual able to activate his or her own unique potential in a constructive way.

OUR VISION

Ek Prayaas has plans to share knowledge and expertise with other organizations which share its goals or like- minded people who wish to adopt similar processes in the spreading of learning along literacy. The most important reason to be educated is to pass on the raising of consciousness and to enhance the quality of life.

HISTORY

In September 2004, what started as a disparate group of 12 children taught by two adults who had a dream is today Ek Prayaas. The school houses the entire primary section from Lower Nursery to Class 5. Ek Prayaas has achieved full attendance of learners from underprivileged homes in the primary section. There are about 200 children in the age group of 4 -14 years, belonging to the surrounding slum areas. Learning materials have been analysed and put in place as per skill requirements of each age group.
